Railway People

How much do signalmen and women earn? - depending on job responsibility.

Dear Siobhan Baillie MP,                                                    10th June 2023

I saw your item in this week's SNJ, and noted that you said train drivers receive £65,000 a year - is that an HS1 driver or the little local two carriage job - or even the long trip to Edinburgh? And in any case it is a very responsible job - lives are at stake if they do not stop at signals.

Signalmen and women are paid what? For they have a very responsible job too  where lives can be lost if they do it wrong - how does their pay compare with drivers - and no doubt there are escalating grades for them too in terms of responsibility - area signal men and women will be paid more than local signal men or women.

In your job, you do not have direct responsibility for lives, so why are you paid so much? Because you have other responsibilities of course.

Clearly it is the degree of responsibility that needs to be recognised, not just shouting out about someone's salary without regard for the full story, and effectively causing "hysteria" about it if taken too literally.

I note your constituents have not spoken to you about rail strikes in any great quantity - perhaps they quietly agree my view as in this email?

Big Brother (bullying?) Government must slow down!!

Jim
